The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team could not hold on to a late second-half lead for the second consecutive game, losing at home 73-71 in overtime to Southern.
The Golden Lions (3-17, 2-9 SWAC) had two players score in double figures, led by
Shaun Doss Jr., who had 21 points and six rebounds.
Terrance Banyard tacked on 13 points, two steals and three blocks and
Markedric Bell added nine points, six rebounds, two steals and four blocks.
UAPB took advantage of great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 16 assists on 22 made field goals. Individually,
Joshuwan Johnson led the way for the Golden Lions with seven assists and
Jalen Lynn also contributed with three assists of his own.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and seven ties in the second half alone, and 16 lead changes and nine ties in the entire game, the Golden Lions went on run that seeming gave them control of the contest.
With less than nine minutes to play, UAPB scored 14 of the games' next 17 points to take a nine-point lead. Doss started the run with a jumper and ended the spurt with free throws, scoring eight Golden Lion points in the 14-3 scoring outburst to turn a 49-47 deficit with 8:50 to play into a 61-52 UAPB lead with 4:18 remaining.
However, Southern outscored the Golden Lions 10-1 down the stretch to force overtime at 62-62. The Jaguars scored the first basket and never trailed in the extra period.
