The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team got itself back in the back in the groove Sunday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup at Southern U. in the Clifford Seymour Gym. The Lady Lions dominated the Jaguars 25-15, 25-21, 25-20.

The Lady Lions (2-1, 2-1 SWAC) would get out to a quick start, jumping on Southern U. (12-7), leading to a 25-15 first set victory.

This was a big road win for our ladies," said UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas. "From the start of the game, we had really good chemistry throughout the match. We preach in practice all the time that you got to communicate and have fun."

The Jaguars wouldn't make it easy for UAPB as they pushed the Lady Lions the entirety of the second set. Leading (22-18), Southern U. went on a rally to cut the deficit to two (22-20), but UAPB scored three-consecutive points to end the game with a kill by sophomore Zyonn Smith.

Southern U. would start fast, jumping out to a (4-1) lead, before UAPB would rally back to take the lead (8-7) with a service ace by Smith. The match went down the stretch tied (17-17) until UAPB went on an (8-3) lead en route to closing out the match.

Junior, Haley Gomez, and sophomore Reagin Williams led the way for UAPB with eight kills apiece, followed by Smith with seven.

Sophomore Nikole Akamine chipped in 12 assists for the Lady Lions, and junior Ambria Schneringer added nine. On the defensive side, Gomez led all players with a game-high five blocks, and junior Breana August rounded out with nine digs.

UAPB will be back in action in a non-conference matchup at home Friday, Feb. 5, against in-state foe Philander Smith at 6 p.m.
