#UAPBVolleyball Defeats Texas Southern In Home Opener

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team rattled off three straight-set victories to pull out a 3-1 win over Texas Southern in the 2020-21 season opener on Sunday afternoon inside the H.O. Clemmons Arena. 

It was the first match of the Lady Lions in 14 months, with the 2020 season postponed to the spring by the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the majority of Division I conferences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Texas Southern won the opening set, 25-23, before UAPB roared together three-straight sets by 25-20, 25-17, and 25-17. 

"Well, it feels good to pick up a good conference win," said UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas. "We prepared all season by getting in the weight room and staying in the gym trying to get better every day. It was by the grace of God how we secured the victory and we want to credit him on our strength today, but we got to continue to stay focus and humble."

Sophomore Zyonn Smith led UAPB with a season-high 16 kills, followed by junior Haley Gomez with nine, and junior Destiny Thomas added eight kills. 

Gomez, the preseason SWAC Blocker of the Year, continues to make her appearance around the net and led all players with eight blocks. Sophomore Nikole Akamine had a career-high 21 assist, followed by junior Ambria Schneringer with 14. In a starting role sophomore, Nyah Ellis led the Lady Lions with 26 digs, followed by redshirt junior Kaila Robinson with 12. 

No fans will be permitted into the arena, as the Lady Lions host Prairie View Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the H.O. Clemmons Arena. The match will be streamed live online at uapblionsroar.com/live and on the UAPB Athletics App.
