#UAPBVolleyball Season Recap

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team wrapped up its first season and clinched a berth in the SWAC conference tournament for the first time since 2017 under first-year head coach Chelsey Lucas.
 
UAPB returned only one starter, Haley Gomez, from the 2018 team and added 13 new faces for the Lady Lions.  
 
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Kaila Robinson, a Ridgefield, Washington native, was named 2019 SWAC Newcomer of the Year.   She was a leader on the floor and played a significant role in helping UAPB advance to the conference tournament. Robinson was third on the team in kills, with a total of 199, and collected 43 assists, 15 blocks, and 26 serving aces. She also finished the regular season with six games in double-digits in kills for UAPB.
 

Haley Gomez played a significant role in head coach Lucas first season.  Gomez ranks fourth in the conference and first on the team in blocks, with a total of 93.  Gomez also ranks first on the team in kills with a total of 245.  Gomez had a career-high 18 kills against Southern U. 
 

Elyssa Kennedy led the Lady Lions in assist with a total of 428.  Kennedy had a career-high 29 assists against Alabama A&M.  
 

Breana August led the team in the digs category.  She leads the teams and rank six in the conference with a total of 346 digs.  August had a career-high 21 digs against Alabama St.
 
The Lady Lions started the season playing 17 games on the road before sweeping Fisk University twice in their home opener.  With a team of high-energy and new faces, the Lady Lions knocked off the conference three-time defending champs in the SWAC Round-Up.
