HOUSTON, TX. – The 7th-seeded University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team lost to second-seeded Texas Southern 77-46 on Tuesday night in the Cricket Wireless Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at H&PE Arena.
The Lady Lions clinched a berth in the SWAC Tournament for the first time since 2018, under the direction of first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown.
The Lady Lions had two student-athletes score in double-figures in the matchup against the Lady Tigers. Senior Noe'll Taylor finished with 12 points followed by junior Jayla Atmore with 10 points.
UAPB got off to a quick start, with freshman Nissa Sam-Grant driving the lane drawing a foul and connecting on two free-throws to give the Lady Lions an early 4-0 lead before the Tigers would take the lead 14-6.
The Lady Lions responded going on a 12-8 run to cut the lead to one, to put the score at 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with both teams exchanging baskets before Texas Southern jumped out to a 27-18 lead before UAPB cut the lead to two at 29-27 with a jumper by Tyler Pyburn with 3:37 left in the second half.
With Texas Southern leading, UAPB kept the game within close with a layup by Taylor to go into intermission down 35-31.
In the second-half, TSU pulled away for win.
