HOUSTON, TX. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team displayed tremendous grit on Sunday afternoon at MacGregor Park after erasing a 3-0 deficit in the fifth inning against Texas Southern to win 10-5.
Texas Southern jumped out to a fast start in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead.
UAPB responded in the top of the fifth when senior Andrew Szalkowski reached base after being hit a pitch, followed by two consecutive walks with seniors Justin Robinson and Nick Kreutzer to load the bases. Junior Kacy Higgins poked a single to right field scoring Szalkowski and Robinson to cut the lead to one at 3-2
The Tigers extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take a 5-2 lead.
The Golden Lions showed signs of not giving up when Szalkowski blasted a solo home run over the left-field fence in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Tigers lead at 5-3. Robinson took advantage of Texas Southern defense when he reached base on a fielder choice and stole second on the following pitch. The Golden Lions had back to back doubles with senior Nick Kreutzer, scoring Robinson and junior Humberto Maldonado, scoring Kreutzer to tie the game at 5-5.
Higgins added to the rally with a single to left field, scoring Maldonado to give UAPB their first lead of the game at 6-5.
The Golden Lions bats were warming up as they entered the top of the seventh inning. Senior Larry Sims singled to left field, then advanced to second after Szalkowski walked with no outs. UAPB added two more runs with two consecutive doubles by Roesch, scoring Sims, and Kreutzer, scoring Szalkowski, to put the score at 9-5.
UAPB added a security run in the top of the ninth inning when Higgins singled to left and scored off a doubled by Austin Krzeminski to clinch the win on the road.
Junior Korey Wasson showed off his arm strength, pitching a complete game for his second win of the season with 11 strikeouts.
Higgins led UAPB at the plate going 4-for-6 with three RBIs, followed by Szalkowski going 2-for-3 with a home run, and Kreutzer went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
UAPB will be back in action Wednesday against Oklahoma at 6:30 p.m. in Norman, OK.
