Baseball Falls To Texas Southern

HOUSTON - After the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team battled back from an early deficit to get within three, Texas Southern pulled away late to take game one of the conference opener 13-7 Friday at MacGregor Park.

The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, scoring one run in the first two innings and five in the bottom of the third inning before the Golden Lions got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from senior Larry Sims and sophomore Brandon Simon.  Junior Kacy Higgins then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Sims to put the score at 7-1.

Texas Southern added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the score 8-1, before UAPB responded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs. Junior Darrian Aldridge singled to center field, followed by senior Justin Robinson's single to right field, advancing Aldridge to second base.  Junior Jarficur Parker's sacrifice bunt moved Robinson and Aldridge to second and third, respectively, before junior Humberto Maldonado singled to left center, scoring Aldridge and Robinson to cut the Tigers lead at 8-3.

Texas Southern responded in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings and pushed the lead to 10-3 before UAPB went on a rally.   Parker reached base in the top of the seventh inning after being hit by a pitch, then scored on a walk after the bases were loaded to put the score at 10-4.

The Golden Lions would keep the momentum going in the top of the eighth inning, when junior Jackson Rehkow doubled to right field, followed by Aldridge reaching base on an error. Robinson came through with a triple to center field, scoring Parker and Aldridge to cut the lead to 10-6. Robinson would score off a sac fly by Sims for the final UAPB run.

Simon added going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Robinson finished 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run, and adding one RBI.
