Basketball To Host Texas Southern On First Responders Night

2/23/2020 11:45:00 AM

The University of Arkansas At Pine Bluff women's and men's basketball teams will conclude a two-game homestand Monday with a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader vs. Texas Southern in the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

It's First Responders Night as all police, fire, military, and EMS personnel will be admitted free in uniform, with badge or ID up to four people for Monday's game.

The UAPB Sports Network broadcast begins at 5:15 p.m. on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com/live and on the free UAPB Athletics App. The games will also be video streamed at uapblionsroar.com/watch.

Women's basketball took a big step toward solidifying a berth in the Cricket Wireless SWAC Basketball Tournament with a wire-to-wire 69-54 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday night.

Jayla Atmore came off the bench to lead four players in double figures by tallying 15 points along with nine rebounds and three of the Lady Lions' 13 steals, their second-highest total in conference play this season.

Kyeonia Harris scored 14 points with four rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Trasity Totten also added 14 points with eight rebounds and three assists, and No'ell Taylor scored 10 points with a team-high five steals.

The win by UAPB (5-19 overall, 4-10 SWAC) combined with Alabama State's loss to Southern moved the Lady Lions to within one game of seventh place with four games remaining. UAPB holds the tie breaker based on point differential (+9) in the two matchups against the Lady Hornets as the teams split the regular season series. UAPB is also now two games ahead of Grambling for the 8th seed and hold the tiebreaker against the Lady Tigers based on the win over GSU on Feb. 3 in the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

In the first meeting of the season, Texas Southern escaped with a 78-77 win after UAPB erased a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead with 13 seconds. TSU then scored the game-winning basket with seven seconds remaining and made a defensive stop on the final possession to win.

TSU is tied for second place in the conference standings with Southern in the loss column and leads the SWAC in scoring at 71.0 points per game. Ciana Cryor (1st at 17.1 ppg), Niya Mitchell (3rd at 15.8 ppg) and Ataiya Bridges (8th at 12.5 ppg) all rank in the league's top 10 in scoring. Mitchell also leads the SWAC in rebounds at 11.5 rpg.

On the men's side, it was another heartbreaking defeat for the Golden Lions, who did not trail for nearly 35 minutes in the game but lost down the stretch to first place Prairie View 69-61. Markedric Bell scored 14 points with four rebounds and three assists, Terrance Banyard scored 13 along with seven rebounds, and Marquell Carter scored 11 with a team-high eight rebounds.

The Golden Lions must win to keep its chances of a SWAC Tournament berth alive in trying to catch Alabama A&M for the 8th seed.

Texas Southern, which defeated UAPB earlier this season, is one game behind Prairie View in the standings.  The Tigers are third in the league in scoring at 72.2 points per game and are led by Tyrik Armstrong's 14.2 ppg (8th in SWAC).
