Softball Wraps Up Final Day Of UCA Michelle Memorial Classic

CONWAY, Ark.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team dropped game one to Morehead St. 8-4 and game two 21-5 to Southern Miss. in the UCA Michelle Memorial Classic at Farris Field. 


GAME 1: Morehead St. 8 UAPB 4

The Lady Lions got on the board first in the top of the first inning, when junior Anne Gerwitz walked and scored off a double by freshman Samaria Jackson to give UAPB a 1-0 lead. 

Morehead St. jump to a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning before the Lady Lions battled back to take the lead at 4-3. Gerwitz started the rally with a double to center, followed by a single to left field by freshman Samaria Jackson. The Lady Lions cut the lead to one at 3-2 with an RBI ground out by sophomore Felicia Drake. Sophomore Desiree Bumpers kept the rally going with a single up the middle, scoring Jackson to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Leslie Arreola single up the middle, scoring Bumpers to regain the lead 4-3.  

The Lady Eagles managed to score five runs in the bottom of the six inning to claim game one.  

Bumpers led the Lady Lions at the plate, going 2-for-3. Gerwitz and Jackson collected two hits apiece.  

GAME 2: Southern Miss. 21 UAPB 5

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a fast start in game two, scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the first. 

UAPB responded in the top of the second with back to back home runs by Jackson and Arreola to put the score at 14-2. Junior Deanna Harrington reached after being hit by a pitch, then advance to second on a wild pitch. Harrington advanced to third on a fielder choice and would score off a sac fly by sophomore Faith Santa Cruz to put the score at 14-3.  

Southern Miss. would tack on one more run in the bottom of the second inning before the Lady Lions would add two more runs in the top of the third when freshman Harli Rogers and junior Alyssa Wesley reached base on a fielding error and hit by a pitch. Both players would later score off a fielding errors. 

Jackson led UAPB at the plate going 1-for-3 with a home run, followed by Arreola going 1-for-2 with a home run. 

The Lady Lions will be back in action Friday against Mississippi Valley St. at 3 p.m. in the Mississippi Valley St. Tournament in Itta Bena, MS.
