New Orleans, La. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team split a pair of games at the Andre Dawson Classic, defeating Prairie View 7-6 in 10 innings, and losing late to Alabama State 6-5 at Maestri Field on the campus of the University of New Orleans.
GAME 1: UAPB 7 Prairie View 6 (10 innings)
A late-inning rally lifted the Golden Lions to the win.
After the Panthers struck first in the top of the first, the Golden Lions responded scoring two in the bottom of the first inning. UAPB led off with two straight singles by senior Darrian Aldridge and junior Jarficur Parker, before senior Nick Kreutzer doubled to left field to give the Golden Lions a 2-1 lead.
After Prairie jumped to a 4-3 lead, UAPB responded with a single up the middle by Parker, who would eventually score off a sac fly by freshman Adian Martinez to cut the lead to 4-3.
Prairie View would jump to a 6-3 lead before UAPB mounted a rally against the Panthers. In the bottom of the eight inning sophomore Braelin Hence led off with a single to right field. Senior Justin Robinson singled to right field advancing Hence before junior Kacy Higgins blasted the game-tying home run over left field to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, the Golden Lions kept the momentum going with two straight walks, putting senior Jackson Rehkow and Robinson on first and second. Higgins came up big with a laser hit down the third baseline to force an error on the third baseman and give the Golden Lions their first win of the season.
Freshman Rocky King went 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, with one strikeout. Senior Dalton Acosta came in going 3.1 innings for the win (1-0), allowing one hit, two runs, and striking out one.
GAME 2: UAPB 5 Alabama St. 6
The Hornets scored three runs in the first two innings to go up 3-0.
The Golden Lions clawed their way back into the game in the top of the fifth inning when Rekow walked, then advanced to second on a fielder choice, before the Hornets would commit two straight errors to move Higgins to third, Hence to first, and score Rekow. On the next pitch Hence would steal second base, and Higgins would cut the lead to 3-2 on a wild pitch moving Hence to third. The Golden Lions would tie the game at 3-3, scoring Hence off a sac fly by Parker.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning, UAPB would grab their first lead of the game, 5-3 when Parker doubled down the left-field line to start the inning, followed by Kreutzer 2-run homer deep right field.
The Hornets would answer back in the bottom of the ninth to score three runs to sneak away with the win.
Kreutzer led the Golden Lions at the plate with a two-run homerun, going 1-for-4, along with two RBIs, followed by Parker going 2-for-4, with one RBI and a run scored.
UAPB will wrap of the final day of the Andre Dawson Classic Sunday at 11 a.m. against Alcorn St.
