The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team's late rally again came up short against the Alabama St. Lady Hornets, falling 68-65 Monday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The Lady Lions had three players score in double figures, led by freshman Tyler Pyburn, who had 19 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Junior Trasity Totten added 18 points off of the bench, and senior Kyeonia Harris chipped in with 12 points and five assists.
Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter before the Lady Hornets went on a run and went into the locker room at the half with a 40-25 lead.
In the second half, Alabama State jumped to its largest lead of the game 58-41 before UAPB went on a 12-0 run, finished off by Noe'll Taylor's layup, to shrink the deficit to 58-53 with 2:55 to go in the contest. The Lady Lions kept their comeback going, cutting the deficit to one on two different occasions.
The Lady Lions outscored Alabama St. 40-28 in the second half.
"I definitely have to give credit to Alabama St. for coming out and playing hard, but the last 15 minutes of the game we did a really good job of defending and knocking down shots," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "We made some adjustments coming out of halftime, but when you have a player like Pyburn coming in making big shots and Totten stepping up big off the bench, gives us a chance."
The Golden Lions return to action Saturday against Southern at 3 p.m. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The UAPB Sports Network will have a live radio broadcast on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com, and on the free UAPB Athletics App.
