#UAPBWomensHoops Returns To Action Hosting New Mexico

12/16/2020 10:30:00 AM

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team returns to action Thursday in a 2 p.m. home game against New Mexico.

Limited seating is available in the H.O. Clemmons Arena, with free admission to the contest. Masks will be required, and temperature checks will be conducted for all fans.

The UAPB Sports Network broadcast will begin at 1:45 p.m. on 99.3 FM the Beat. Fans can also listen and watch online free of charge at uapblionsroar.com/live. It's the first of three games in five days for women's basketball, as UAPB will play at Central Arkansas Friday at 5 p.m. and Monday at Arkansas at 1 p.m.

The contest could be a high-scoring affair, as both teams have a multitude of players averaging in double figures. Tyler Pyburn (15.0 ppg / t-9th) is one of five UAPB players in the Top 15 in the SWAC in scoring, along with Joyce Kennerson and Trasity Totten (each at 14.0 ppg / t-10th), Kaila Walker (13.0 ppg/t-12th), and Shicoriya Orr (12.0 ppg/t-15th).

The Lady Lions (1-1) have not played since December 1, a 74-70 home loss to Central Arkansas. Walker had a season-high of 22 points and five rebounds for the Golden Lions, who had three players in double figures. Kennerson added 12 points and five assists, and Totten scored 11 points with three assists.

For the second straight game, UAPB was tenacious defensively in the fourth quarter. After allowing only 11 points against Arkansas State on November 27, the Golden Lions yielded just 12 in the final period against Central Arkansas State.

New Mexico (2-0) of the Mountain West Conference has posted wins over Midwestern State (93-65) and Sam Houston State (98-89). The Lobos have six players averaging in double figures, led by Jaedyn De La Cerda averaging 20.0 ppg. Twin sisters LaTascya Duff (15.5 ppg) and LaTora Duff (14.5 ppg) rank second and third, respectively, ahead of Antonia Anderson (11.5 ppg), Ahlise Hurst (10.5 ppg), and Corina Carter (10.0 ppg).
