Monday Football Rewind: Ballard III Earns SWAC Newcomer Honors For Second Time; Southern Up Next In Blackout Game

University of Arkansas At Pine Bluff WR Harry Ballard III earned Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week honors for the second time this season for his performance in Saturday's win at Tennessee State.

Ballard (6-3, 205; Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) caught a season-high seven passes for 112 yards and scored on a three-yard touchdown run in the Golden Lions' 37-31 win.
Ballard scored his rushing touchdown with just under four minutes remaining to extend the UAPB lead to 31-24.

After the Tigers' tied the score at 31-31 with 50 seconds remaining, Ballard caught three passes for 58 yards on the final drive, setting up Jeremy Brown's 17-yard touchdown reception on the final play of the game to win it for the Golden Lions.

Ballard earned SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors following the Alabama A&M game, catching five passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns in the 52-34 win. Ballard had TD receptions of 59 yards in the first quarter, 49 yards in the second quarter, and 24 yards in the third quarter.

Ballard leads the SWAC in receiving yards (437) and touchdown receptions (five), and is second in receptions (20).

ADDITIONAL NOTABLES vs. TENNESSEE ST:
 
  • UAPB defeated the Tigers for the first time in five meetings. The Golden Lions had previously faced TSU as Arkansas AM&N in 1944 and 1947, and as UAPB in 2012 and 2016.
  • UAPB is 3-1 for the first time since 2012 and has won three games in a row also for the first time since 2012.
  • RB Taeyler Porter posted his second 100-yard rushing game of the season and ninth career 100-yard rushing game, carrying the ball 18 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns, and catching two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown.
  • RB Keshawn Williams rushed 13 times for 84 yards, caught two passes for 22 yards, and had 76 yards on three kickoff returns to total 182 all-purpose yards.
  • Williams (49 carries, 339 yards, 3 TDs) and Porter (61 carries, 336 yards, 5 TDs) rank third and fifth, respectively, in the SWAC in rushing yards, with Porter is tied for the conference lead in rushing touchdowns.
  • Williams' 21.9-yard kickoff return average is fifth in the SWAC, and his 613 all-purpose yards (339 rushing, 55 receiving, 219 kickoff returns) is second in the SWAC.
  • Brown now has caught a touchdown pass in three consecutive games.
  • P Myles Pini (pronounced PY-nee) averaged 42.6 yards on five punts, with two downed inside the 20. He ranks fourth in the conference in punting with a 41.0-yard average.
  • DB Shawn Steele recorded six tackles and had a career-high three pass breakups in the game and leads the SWAC with seven.
  • DB Blake Conner made a career-high nine tackles (six solo).
  • DB Jaylen Thigpen made a season high nine tackles (seven solo) and 1.0 TFL with one pass breakup. He has recorded 16 tackles in the past two games.
  • DE Jalen Steward and LB Monroe Beard III each recorded a sack. UAPB has now recorded at least one sack in 10 consecutive games.
 
BLACKOUT GAME NEXT: The Golden Lions open a four-game homestand Saturday against Southern at 6 p.m. at Simmons Bank Field. Fans are encouraged to wear all black to the game.
