UAPB Hoops Loses Tough One To Jackson St. 57-56

Pine Bluff, Ark. – In their regular-season home finale, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff came up just short against Jackson St.
 
Senior guard Martaveous McKnight shot bounced off the rim with four seconds left, allowing the Tigers to escape H.O. Clemmons Arena with a 57-56 victory in front of a crowd of nearly 2,500.
 
McKnight finished with 18 points and sophomore forward Shaun Doss added 12 for UAPB (12-18, 9-8 SWAC), which missed out on a chance to move into sole possession of third place in the conference.
 
Junior guard Venjie Wallis scored 16 points to lead Jackson St. (11-18, 8-8).  Senior forward Chris Howell had 14 points and freshman forward Jayveous McKinnis ended with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lemmie Howard also chipped in with 11 points for the Tigers, who built a lead as big as nine in the first half and led 49-40 with 4:39 remaining in the game until the Golden Lions rallied.
 
A basket by senior guard Marcus Wallace started an 8-0 run that pulled the Golden Lions within one, 49-48, with 2:55 to go.  UAPB was still down 57-56 after a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Terrance Banyard with 12 seconds left and had a chance to win the game after Howell missed from the foul line with nine ticks showing. McKnight snagged the rebound after the miss and raced down the floor before misfiring on his game-winner.
 
UAPB will wrap up its regular season Saturday at Mississippi Valley State before gearing up for the SWAC Tournament.
 
 
FAST BREAK
 
· The Golden Lions were outrebounded 34-25 and hurt its chances from the foul line, hitting 10 of 20 free throws.
· McKnight had a team-high five steals.
· McKinnis, Howell and Wallis all had six field goals for Jackson St.
· The Tigers only had two bench points compared to the Golden Lions' 12.
· Twenty-six of Jackson State's 57 points came inside the lane.
