UAPB Falls In Heartbreaking Loss To Grambling in SWAC Tournament

GRAMBLING, La. – Cold shooting inside and out cost the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team a chance to advance to the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference men's tournament Tuesday night.

The Golden Lions shot just 18-of-54 (33.3 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-20 from behind the three-point line, to allow Grambling St. to escape the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center with a 59-52, quarterfinal victory.

Junior forward Devante Jackson scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench and junior guard Ivy Smith had 10 points before fouling out for the Tigers, who hit only 15 of their 37 field-goal.

Grambling St. (17-15) knocked down 25 of its 35 free throws while UAPB was 11-of-20, which was a difference maker of the ballgame.

UAPB (13-19) trailed 36-25 at halftime but shot just 31 percent (10 of 32) in the second half.  Senior guard Martaveous McKnight, who was named first-team All-SWAC prior to the game, was only 4-of-15 shooting and ended his stellar UAPB career with 11 points. Sophomore forward Shaun Doss, the team's second-leading scorer, went 4-of-8 and finished with 11 points but added seven rebounds and two steals.

The Golden Lions faced a 45-33 deficit with 14:33 left in the game after a dunk from Tigers' junior forward Axel Mpoyo, but UAPB methodically began to get back in it.  A Doss basket on UAPB's next possession started an 8-0 run that cut Grambling State's lead to 45-41.

Still, UAPB was within 56-52 with 1:42 remaining after two free throws from McKnight with 1:41 to go and had chances to inch closer but couldn't get key shots to fall.  The Golden Lions missed their final six shots of the game.

Grambling St. was also able to maintain its lead down the stretch thanks to its free-throw shooting.  The Tigers went 10-of-16 from the foul line over the game's final five minutes, to seal the victory.
