Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls To Washington St.

PULLMAN, WA.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team fell to Pac-12 foe Washington St., 85-56,  Wednesday night at the Beasley Coliseum.

The Lady Lions scored the first four points of the game with two consecutive baskets from junior Trasity Totten before both teams traded baskets in the first and second quarters.  After being down eight points at 30-22, UAPB would battle back to cut the lead to four points at 35-31 with a fast-break layup by senior Kyeonia Harris with 2:21 left in the second quarter before Washington St. would go on a 10-2 run as time expired with a 45-33 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Cougars put the game away by using their height as an advantage to put the game away for UAPB.

"One of the main things we wanted to do for tonight's game was to win the first five minutes of the game, and it started with freshman Nissa-Sam Grant winning the jump ball tip to get us going," said first-year UAPB head coach Dawn Brown. "We started sluggishly in the last two games, and we wanted to come out and strike first.  One of our biggest areas of improvement tonight is post defense, and I think that once we understand our responsibility and our alignment of where we need to be defensively in transition, I believed that we would be able to cut down on our opponents scoring."

Harris led the Lady Lions with points and five rebounds, followed by senior Aiya El Hassan with 11 points and four rebounds, and junior Jayla Atmore with nine points and four steals.

UAPB will be back in action Monday against Arkansas St. at 7 p.m. in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
