Golden Lions Chat with UAPB Assistant Track Coach Arthur Thomas

12/3/2019 10:00:00 AM

Where are you from?
Lake Providence, LA

What do you do in your spare time away from Track and Field?
My spare time is spent working out or researching ways to make my athletes better.

When coaching the throwers, what do you look for in a student-athlete to have the potential to be good?
I look for individuals willing to grind and do the work that others run away from. Also I'm looking for one that strives to always be better than the day before.  There are several people that set goals but won't do what's necessary to obtain them. I'm looking for someone who will do what required and then some to achieve their goals.

How were you able to manage time being a two-sport athlete in college?
Being a two-sport athlete wasn't a problem because the sports didn't overlap until it was time for spring football.  But even when they overlapped, I made sure my priorities were in order. If that meant that I had to get up at 5am to study or go to practices because that's all my schedule allowed, then so be it.

Who would you consider the best athlete that you played with or against in college?
I would have to say Terron Armstead. We were like rivals in the discus, but I had to bring my A-game every time against him.

How does it feel knowing UAPB has one of the best throwers programs in the conference?
Being good in the conference is good, but that has never been the focus.  We strive to be one of the best in the NCAA.

What is your philosophy when it comes to coaching?
It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, or whatever the circumstance, your goal is reachable. If YOU do the work, YOU can beat whoever or whatever is in the way.

Name three words that describe Coach Thomas?
Patient, Disciplined, Adaptable
