Men’s Basketball Battle But Come Up Short At Washington St.

PULLMAN, WA.- The University of Arkansas At Pine Bluff men's basketball team gave Washington St. a scare before dropping a 65-50 defeat on the road Sunday night at the Beasley Coliseum.

Both teams went back and forth throughout the game as UAPB jumped out to their largest lead of the game at 24-18 with a basket from junior Jamil Wilson, as they led at intermission with a 28-26 lead.

UAPB took their final lead of the game, 37-35 early in the second half at the 14:17 mark with a layup by Wilson. However, the Cougars answered back with a 9-0 run to pad the lead down the stretch and escape with the win.

Junior Dequan Morrison and Wilson led UAPB with eight points apiece, followed by senior Marquell Carter and junior Jordan McNair with seven points. Carter also had a team-high eight rebounds.

"I thought the guys played well overall," said UAPB head coach George Ivory. "The guys came out and executed on offense and played good defense, but we can't afford to make too many turnovers against a good team like Washington St. I'm pleased and looking forward to conference play."

Defensively, UAPB held Washington St. to just 32 percent from the field in the first half.

UAPB opens SWAC play on Saturday at Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m., with a live radio broadcast on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com and on the free UAPB Athletics App.
