Volleyball Welcomes Southern Thursday In Conference Play

Continuing Southwestern Athletic Conference play, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team welcomes Southern on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the H.O. Clemmons Arena in the Breast Cancer Awareness game.

The Lady Lions are on a two-game winning streak, sweeping Fisk in both matches 25-20, 25-21, 25-15, and 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 last Thursday.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since last year, with the series tied 9-9 since 2010. The Lady Jaguars are in fourth place in the SWAC standings at 5-2, while the Lady Lions stand in seventh place at 2-3.

"The girls are prepared for their first conference game at home," said first-year UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas. "We have to come out focus and determined to win this game to show we can be right there in the mix. We are looking forward to the fans and student body support to rally behind UAPB volleyball on this special night."

Sophomore Haley Gomez leads UAPB with 125 kills, followed by freshman Zyaire Garrit and sophomore Kaila Robinson adding 94 apiece. On the defensive side, Gomez leads the team with a total of 43 blocks, which ranks her fourth in the conference.
