Volleyball Splits On Day Two Of SWAC Roundup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, MS. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team split on day two of the SWAC Roundup, defeating Mississippi Valley St. 3-1 before falling to Jackson St 3-2 Saturday at Jackson St.

The Lady Lions came out strong in the first game of the day, defeating the Lady Devilettes 25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 25-13 in four sets.

With the win, UAPB is now 2-0 versus Mississippi Valley St. in regular-season action.

Sophomore Haley Gomez led UAPB with 12 kills, followed by freshman Samoana Poyer with eight. The Lady Lions had two players in double digits in assists, freshman Elyssa Kennedy with 12 and senior Micayla Pope with 11. On the defensive side, Gomez continues to dominate with three blocks, followed by sophomore Breana August with 16 digs.

UAPB suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Jackson St. in five sets 15-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 9-15.

After losing set one and two, UAPB answered back to claim set three and four, before Jackson St. responded to clinch set five for the win.

The Lady Lions were led on the attack by sophomore Haley Gomez with 10 kills and senior Micayla Pope with 12 assists. Gomez collected a game-high five blocks, followed by junior Bre-Anna Armstrong with four.

"We came out and played a complete game in game one, but we couldn't take advantage of mistakes in game two," said first-year UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas. "We battled back in fourth in game two, but let one slip away. We have to finish on a good note on the final day of the roundup."

UAPB will be back in action Sunday against Alcorn St. at 12:30 p.m.
