Women's Basketball Earns Thrilling Comeback Victory At Alcorn

LORMAN, MS.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team out-scored Alcorn St. Lady Braves (3-15, 2-4 SWAC) (51-45) after the first quarter and shut down the Lady Braves in the fourth quarter in a (59-57) thrilling, come-from-behind victory on the road Monday night. The win was the first for interim head coach Danny Evans.

After falling behind by six in the second quarter, UAPB (4-8, 1-4 SWAC) fought back in the final three quarters to earn the victory. The Lady Lions scored 18 points in the second quarter to pull within one, (27-26), at the halftime break. Junior Kyeonia Harris scored three of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter, but she contributed two key assists.

The two squads battled the rest of the way, with the Lady Lions taking their first lead since the first bucket of the contest, (32-29), with 6:32 remaining in the 3rd qtr.  After Alcorn St. re-gained the lead (37-36) at the end of the 3rd qtr with a three-point basket by Kirdis Clark as time expired.  Sophomore Shania Hatter countered with a lay-up to again go ahead, (38-37), with 9:35 left in the game.

Both teams continued to exchange leads with less than a minute to play before Aiya El Hassan gave UAPB a two-point lead (57-55) after she sank two free throws with 46 seconds left to play.

The Braves counter back with a layup by Jada Hargrove to tie the game at (57-57) with 37 seconds on the clock.  UAPB's El Hassan stepped up big when the team needed her most when she came out the timeout with 13 seconds left and connected with Kyeonia Harris for the layup to give UAPB its final lead of the game (59-57).

Alcorn St. had one final look, but the Lady Lions defense forced the Lady Braves to heave up a desperation jump shot that fell short around the rim as the final buzzer rang.

The Lady Lions plays at home in its next contest, hosting Texas Southern in Greek Night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena Sat. Jan. 26, 2019 at 5:00 p.m.
