PINE BLUFF, Ark. - In its first conference game of the season, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions soccer team trailed 2-0 until senior
Karissa Fenwick scored two goals in the final eight minutes of action to lead her team to a 2-2 draw against Mississippi Valley State University in double overtime at Pumphrey Stadium. As a team UAPB led 17-3 in shots in the Southwestern Athletic Conference contest.
"If we lost that game I was going to lose my mind because I thought we dominated the game from start to finish," said Lady Lions head coach Dr.
Ted Flogaites. "We played as well as we played all year; they (Mississippi Valley) had two shots and two goals, and the first goal we gave up was totally against the run of play."
In the 10th minute of the contest, Mississippi Valley's Stephany Adomako scored a free kick that went right through the hands of UAPB goalkeeper
Sariah Orocu. Despite producing five first half shots on goal, UAPB trailed 1-0 at halftime. The Lady Lions defense held Mississippi Valley in check in the opening half as it gave up just one shot on goal.
In the 51st minute, the Devilettes' extended its lead to 2-0 when the NCAA leader in goals scored, Laadi Issaka, found Hannah Crise for a goal.
In the 83rd minute, the match seemed to be over when senior
Karissa Fenwick received a ball from
Shannon Seymour and buried it in the back of the net to bring the score to 2-1.
"They thought we were dead and buried in the final 12 minutes when we trailed by two goals, but I knew if we found a goal we'd be right back in the contest, and you have to give our team credit for never quitting," said Dr. Flogaites. "If there is one thing we don't do, we're not an easy out. We've gotten better in four straight contests, now we're scoring goals, we actually played some nice football today, and it's a good feeling. We absolutely earned the draw."
UAPB's first goal of the season clearly gave UAPB life, and four minutes later, Seymour found Fenwick for yet another goal in the 87th minute to tie the match and force overtime. Both teams were unable to score the coveted golden goal as the match ended in a 2-2 draw after two 10-minute overtime periods.
UAPB (0-3-1) returns to action on Sunday, September 23 as it hosts Alcorn State University in SWAC action. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Pumphrey Stadium in Pine Bluff.
