PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions volleyball team took care of business at its temporary home with a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-15, 25-20) over
Crowley's Ridge College at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
Four Lady Lions finished with 10 or more kills, including sophomores
Kaitlyn Hapke and
Emily McCook and freshmen
Kaylyn Brown and
Haley Gomez. Junior setter
Britney Sahlmann dominated the match with a game-high 39 assists to go along with eight digs and two block assists.
"A win is a win, and that's what we got tonight, so I'll take it," said head coach
Dustin Sahlmann. "However, I wasn't very happy with all of the things that went on tonight, but we've got one more day of practice before we start conference competition, so we're going to work hard to clean up some things and we will be ready to go this weekend."
Hapke finished with a game-high 17 digs while fellow Lady Lion
Jenna Wuzinski produced 16 digs in the victory. McCook added three service aces to help seal the deal over the Pioneers.
Crowley Ridge's Olivia Deckelman tied UAPB's Brown with a game-high 11 kills. Sophomore
Cheyenne Odgers finished with 14 digs.
"I like playing the east side because you've got some strong teams on that side, so this weekend will be a good measuring stick for our team," said Coach Sahlmann. "We played one of the strongest non-conference schedules since I've been here and we competed really well. I'm looking forward to seeing where we're at with the rest of the conference."
UAPB (2-9) returns to action on Friday as it travels to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to partake in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) volleyball round-up. On Friday, September 21, the Lady Lions will face Alcorn State University at 10 a.m., then Alabama A&M at 7 p.m.
