BROOKINGS, S.D. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions suffered a monumental loss with a 90-6 drumming against #3 South Dakota State University in the 52nd annual Beef Bowl at the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
The Jackrabbits took a 14-0 lead as quarterback Taryn Christion tossed two quick touchdowns to Blake Kunz and Adam Anderson. Minutes later, UAPB kicker
Jamie Gillan kicked a 47-yard field goal to put the Golden Lions on the board as it trailed 14-3.
Christion then connected on another deep touchdown to give SDSU a 21-3 lead, but UAPB responded when Gillan nailed another field goal, this time from 20 yards out which brought the score to 21-6. Gillan later produced a career-high 71-yard punt that confused the Jackrabbits' return man.
However, the Jackrabbits answered back with two more quick touchdown strikes from Christion as South Dakota State took a 35-6 lead in the second quarter. UAPB wide receiver
Josh Wilkes slowly found a rhythm and finished with four catches for 80 yards while teammate
DeJuan Miller hauled in a 40-yard pass from
Roger Totten, II, but UAPB could not capitalize as it got all the way down to the Jackrabbits two-yard line before Totten tossed an interception in the end zone to end the half. The turnover ended a 10-play 71-yard drive for the Golden Lions.
UAPB running back
Taeyler Porter ran hard all night and finished with 21 rushes for 106 yards, including a 36 -yard scamper. Totten II completed 9-of-21 passes for 131 yards and two interceptions while Christion finished 13-of-14 with 332 yards and five touchdowns.
Freshman
David Chapple finished produced five rushes for 41 yards while fellow Golden Lion
Jamal Gladden finished with 13 yards on the ground.
On the defensive end,
Nijul Canada produced a team-high nine tackles while teammate
Kolby Watts finished with six tackles for UAPB.
Shawn Steele chipped in with five tackles while
Corey Bell and
Paul Reeves both had four tackles apiece.
UAPB (1-2) returns to action on Saturday, September 22 as it hosts Prairie View A&M University in its first conference game of the year. Kickoff it set for 6 p.m. at Simmons Bank Field. The game has been dubbed a "blackout" as fans are encouraged to wear black.
