Kreutzer's late home run helps lift UAPB over Prairie View

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions took two of three games on the road against Prairie View A&M in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. The Golden Lions won game one 6-5 in dramatic fashion, fell in game two 12-3, then bounced back in the rubber match with a 6-2 victory in 10 innings.


UAPB 6, Prairie View 5

The Golden Lions got on board first in the second inning when John Magnuson hit a sacrifice fly ball that allowed JP Soriano to score. However, the Panthers responded with a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead.

UAPB answered back in the sixth inning when Jacob Columbo produced a two RBI single that allowed Ricardo Sanchez and Nick Kreutzer to touch home plate as the Golden Lions took a 3-2 lead.

The Panthers responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead; however, UAPB scored three huge runs in the top of the ninth inning as Magnuson once again picked up a RBI single to score Sanchez. Moments later, Ryan Mallison generated a two RBI double that brought home the game-tying run in Austin Toth and the game-winning run in Magnuson.

Magnuson finished 2-for-3 from the plate with one run and two RBI.

UAPB pitcher Nathan Sawrie (6-12) was credited with the victory. In 2.1 innings of work, he struck out four batters and gave up zero runs and no hits.

As a team the Golden Lions produced 11 hits while the Panthers finished with seven.


Prairie View 12, UAPB 3

 Prairie View scored three runs in both the first and second innings and took a 10-0 lead before UAPB responded in the top of the sixth with a run as Nick Kreutzer generated a RBI double that brought home Ryan Mallison.

The Golden Lions managed two more runs in the top of the eighth when JP Soriano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Jarficur Parker. During the next at-bat, Ricardo Sanchez was also hit by a pitch that allowed Sergio Esparza to score, cutting the deficit to 10-3.

Prairie View finally got out of the jam and scored two more insurance runs in the bottom stanza to close the door on any comeback attempt. 

UAPB pitcher Cody Holmes (1-1) picked up the loss as he struck out six batters and gave up five run (three unearned) and seven hits in 5.0 innings of work.

In the rubber match, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, but UAPB tied things up in the top of the sixth inning when Sergio Esparza produced a sacrifice fly ball that brought home Jarficur Parker.

Both teams did not score another run until the 10th inning when Ryan Mallison picked up a RBI that scored Austin Softley. Esparza then produced a RBI that brought home the winning run in Austin Toth. To make matters worse for Prairie View, power hitter Nick Kreutzer hit a 3-run home run to bring the score to 6-1 in favor of the Golden Lions. The Panthers managed one run in the bottom of the frame but it wasn't enough as UAPB held on for the 6-2 victory.

As a team the Golden Lions produced eight hits while its opponent finished with seven hits.

UAPB pitcher Peyton Burks (4-5) was credited with the victory as he went the distance (10.0 innings). He struck out seven batters and gave up two earned runs and seven hits.

Mallison finished 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI while teammate Kreutzer finished 1-for-5 from the plate with one run and three RBI. 


UAPB (20-21, 12-10 SWAC) returns to action on Tuesday, May 8 as it travels up to Little Rock to face Arkansas-Little Rock. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field.
