Alcorn ends UAPB's season with 14-13 thriller in SWAC elimination game in NOLA

Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. - In an elimination game that will be remembered for the ages, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions fell 14-13 against Alcorn State University in the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The game produced a total of 27 runs on 29 hits.

Alcorn jumped out on top early with six runs scored in the second inning. However, the Golden Lions responded with three runs of its own in the bottom frame when Jacob ColumboĀ reached on a fielder's choice which allowed JP Soriano to touch home plate for UAPB's first run. Jarficur Parker then generated a RBI single which brought home Ryan Mallison. Moments later, Ricardo Sanchez singled to second base as ColumboĀ crossed home plate, bringing the score to 6-3 in favor of the Braves.

After a scoreless third inning, AlcornĀ added two runs in the top of the fourth. UAPBĀ answered back with a run in the bottom half of the stanza when Kacy Higgins scored on a fielding error, cutting Alcorn's lead to 8-4.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, UAPBĀ poured in a total of four runs to tie the game at eight apiece after a SorianoĀ two run shot to right field. Later in the inning, Higgins matched Soriano with a two run shot of his own to left field to tie the game.

After a scoreless sixth inning, UAPBĀ broke the tie when ColumboĀ produced a RBI single to left field that allowed MallisonĀ to score, giving UAPBĀ a 9-8 lead over the Braves.

In the eighth inning, Alcorn bounced back with five straight runs and took a commanding 13-9 lead before UAPBĀ answered back in dramatic fashion with four runs of its own in the bottom frame to once again tie the game 13-13. Nick Kreutzer started things off with a deep bomb to right field that scored Sergio Esparza and Sanchez, bringing the score to 13-12 in favor of Alcorn. Moments later, John Magnuson produced a sacrifice fly ball that allowed MallisonĀ to come home and tie the ball game.

In the ninth, it was the Braves who broke the tie in the top half of the inning to take a 14-13 lead. UAPBĀ simply could not muster up any more magic in the bottom frame as it fell by one run.

UAPB pitcher Tim Reynolds was credited with the loss. In 1.2 innings of work, he gave up three runs and four hits and struck out one batter. Fellow Golden Lion pitcher Nathan Sawrie saw the most work for the Golden Lions as he struck out three batters, gave up two runs and three hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

AlcornĀ advances to play Jackson State while UAPB's season comes to an end.
