Golden Lions baseball team survives 6-5 thriller over TSU in SWAC play

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions baseball team led for most of the afternoon before a late comeback attempt from its opponent, but UAPB held on for the 6-5 victory over Texas Southern University in game one of the three-game series at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. The victory marks UAPB's fifth win in a row.

The Golden Lions took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning when Larry Sims produced a RBI single to center field that brought in JP Soriano. Moments later, Kacy Higgins generated a sacrifice fly that scored Ricardo Sanchez. After the Tigers scored one run in the third, the Golden Lions team responded with two additional runs in the bottom of the stanza as Sergio Esparza produced a RBI single to center field that allowed Jarficur Parker to touch home plate, then Sanchez doubled to right field, bringing home Soriano.

UAPB led 4-1 before Texas Southern scored a run in both the sixth and seventh inning, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Golden Lions then answered back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a home run from first baseman Nick Kreutzer which proved to be the game-winner. The Tigers managed two late runs in the top of the eighth but the Golden Lions held on for the narrow victory.

UAPB pitcher Tyrus Lopez (7-2) was credited with the victory as he struck out one batter and gave up three earned runs and five hits in 6.1 innings of work while fellow Golden Lion Nathan Sawrie picked up his fourth save of the year when he struck out two batters, gave up two earned runs just two hits in 2.2 innings. Aaron Solis (7-3) was credited with the loss.

Soriano finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while teammate Sanchez went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.

UAPB (18-17, 10-7 SWAC) returns to action on Saturday, April 28 for game two of the 3-game series against TSU. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
