#8 UAPB eliminated from SWAC tourney with 70-60 road loss to #1 Southern

Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. - The eight seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff gave all it could handle to top seeded Southern University and led 34-33 midway through the third quarter before falling 70-60 in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. While the loss eliminates the Lady Lions from the tournament, Southern advances and will face Prairie View A&M in the semifinal round of the SWAC tournament.

UAPB (8-21, 6-12 SWAC) was led by senior point guard Destiny Brewton who finished with a team-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with three rebounds, three assists and one steal while fellow Lady Lion senior Faith Ohanta finished with 10 points, four boards and two assists before fouling out of the game. Center Shawntayla Harris chipped in with eight points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and one steal before also fouling out of the contest.

No'ell Taylor had a solid game with 12 points, six boards, two assists and two steals in the loss. As a team UAPB made just five buckets the entire first half but did not miss a single free throw (7-for-7). For the game UAPB finished 21-of-53 (40 percent) from the field while its opponent shot just 19-of-62 (31 percent). However, the difference in the game came at the free throw line. Although both teams shot 76 percent, Southern made 12 more free throws (28-of-37) while the Lady Lions made 16-of-21 free throws.

Southern won the rebound battle 43-37 and scored 18 points off of 24 UAPB turnovers. The win completes the season sweep over the Lady Lions as Southern finished the season a perfect 3-0 over UAPB.

Southern (16-12, 14-4 SWAC) was led by SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Brianna Green as she produced a double-double, scoring 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, grabbing 10 boards and getting five steals in the victory. She shot 12-for-15 from the charity stripe while teammate Samantha Duncan chipped in with 10 points of her own.
