Box Score New Orleans, La. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions baseball team earned its first victory of the season in a 5-4 thriller over Grambling State University in game two of the Andre Dawson Classic at Maestri Field on the campus of the University of New Orleans.
UAPB's
Sergio Esparza started things off with a home run in the top of the first before Grambling answered back with a two-run shot. However, the Golden Lions tied things up at two apiece after
Jacob Columbo hit a sacrifice fly that scored Esparza. Grambling scored a run in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead before UAPB produced two runs in the top of the sixth off of runs from Columbo and
Ricardo Sanchez.
The G-men (0-2) tied things up in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Golden Lions took the lead in the top of the ninth thanks to a two-out RBI-double from
Jarficur Parker which brought in
Owen Young for the game-winning run.
Although
Tyrus Lopez pitched over six innings, redshirt senior
Austin Softley was credited with the victory.
In game one of the Andre Dawson Classic, the Golden Lions (1-1) led for most of the afternoon before giving up three home runs and a total of five runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined eventually falling 5-4 to Alcorn State University.
Nathan Sawrie was credited with the loss.
UAPB returns to action on Sunday, February 18 as it participates in game three of the Andre Dawson Classic against Alabama State. First pitch is at high noon.
