PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions won the first set and looked good early on before dropping a 4-set match to Texas Southern University (25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 18-25) in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. As a team UAPB hit .126 while its opponent managed to hit .217 in the contest.
"I was happy with the energy level, it was a little bit better than it was from our match on Thursday," said Lady Lions Head Coach
Dustin Sahlmann. "I used a different line up that we have been toying with all through preseason, so I decided it was time to give it a try, and I like the way it looked. It gave us a little bit of a spark and a little more aggressiveness offensively, but as the match wore on, the newness wore off and we lost that spark. We lost that edge and aggression, and we just couldn't get the job done in the end."
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Hapke led UAPB with 10 kills and produced a double-double, adding 10 digs and also four block assists. Freshman teammate
Haley Gomez had a solid game and finished with eight kills and nine digs and fellow Lady Lion
Britney Sahlmann finished with 30 assists for the second match in a row. Gomez and freshman
Kaylyn Brown added two service aces in the loss.
"We talked on Saturday about what its going to take to be successful and get the wins to start piling up, so that effort picked up a little bit today," said Coach Sahlmann. "Now we've got Prairie View coming in on Columbus Day. We always play really well against PV, so I'm excited to have them in the gym, and hopefully our girls are as excited as well."
Kendalle Howard led all Lady Lions with 16 digs
Cheyenne Odgers produced 14 digs.
UAPB (4-14, 2-5 SWAC) returns to action on Monday, October 8 for a Columbus Day special against Prairie View A&M in SWAC action. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
