PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions soccer team won its second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference match, this time over Prairie View A&M in a 1-0 thriller with light rain at
Pumphrey Stadium after
Shannon Seymour played a beautiful service in the box and found
Karissa Fenwick on the back post to break the nil-nil tie in the
64th minute. On the play, Seymour picked up her conference leading eighth assist of the season. For the entire second half, UAPB was down to 11 total players and had no options for substitutions due to injuries but was able to hold on for the crucial conference victory as it leapfrogged Prairie View and moved to sixth place
in the SWAC soccer table.
"It's beyond the scope of comprehension," said UAPB Head Coach Dr.
Ted Flogaites. "This is one of the toughest groups ever; they just want to play and pour everything out there. We know when we come to battle that we have to do it with no substitutes. We can't make changes to affect the game. We can't bring on five or six substitutes at a time, so the players we put out there have to get it done. They know it, and they've been absolute animals and absolutely brilliant."
Junior goalkeeper
Sariah Orocu finished the game with seven saves and produced her second clean sheet in a row. Late in the second half, Orocu made a brilliant save off of a header from Prairie View from inside the six.
Fenwick finished with a game-high four shots on goal while senior
Rebecca Holmes finished with two. Senior defender
Mariah Johnson was brilliant in the back while
Ga'Cole McGriff added pressure to the Lady Panthers.
As a team the Lady Lions produced 17 shots (11 on goal) while its opponent finished with 12 shots (seven on goal). Prairie View ended with 12 fouls while UAPB had 11.
"I fight or die with this team," said Coach Flogaites. "I stand behind these players a million percent."
UAPB (3-5-2, 3-2-2 SWAC) returns to action on Friday, October 19 as it travels to Montgomery to face Alabama State University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
