PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions soccer team shocked the world with a massive 1-0 victory over the Southwestern Athletic Conference's number one team, Texas Southern University, at Pumphrey Stadium. Senior striker
Rebecca Holmes broke the nil-nil tie with a sensational golden goal in the 96th minute of the match to instantly end the contest.
"I said (to my team) give everything," said Lady Lions Head Coach Dr.
Ted Flogaites. "The three ingredients you see in life are stress, pressure and adversity. You have to be able to deal with them, and if you can't deal with them, you're not going to be successful in life. If you look at that performance, that right there was my favorite performance. We were the most organized, the most disciplined, and the most committed. You really just can't ask more from this team. They are doing it week in and week out with a limited number of players. This is ridiculous! But it has nothing to do with me, it has to do with the fact that our players are talented. They listen, they care, they want to be good, and they want to represent the University the right way."
When asked about the goal heard about the world, or in this case, the goal heard around the SWAC, the soccer doctor firmly responded.
"Let me tell you something," said Dr. Flogaites. "What she (Rebecca) does here is the same thing you see in training and in every match. That kid works from start to finish no matter how fatigued she is, she gives her team everything. I think it was a deserving goal for the pressure she put the defense under, and look, she ends up on the ground, then there were two players on the ground and she pops up first. She just wanted to put the ball in the back of the net more than anybody else, and I'm delighted for her. As a senior, that's a great moment to file in your memory bank. It was a superb team win."
Both teams had seven shots each in the first half as the rain slowly trickled down, making the pitch a much faster surface. UAPBÂ managed four corner kicks in the opening half and held its opponent to just two. Junior
Tyler Babb nearly connected on a free kick from just under 30 yards out but Texas Southern goalkeeper Paula Vizoso was able to punch the ball away at the last moment.
In the second half, the Lady Tigers had a great opportunity to win when Brooke Ianeiro struck a ball from a free kick that was brilliantly saved by UAPB goalkeeper
Sariah Orocu. The Colorado native was just able to redirect the ball with her fingertips and forced the ball to bounce off the crossbar, then Holmes quickly cleared the ball off the line as Texas Southern had its best opportunity to break the nil-nil tie. Both Orocu and Vizoso finished the match with five saves apiece, but Orocu produced a clean sheet while Vizoso allowed the golden goal in overtime.
"Sariah was excellent today," said Dr. Flogaites. "She played very clean in very wet conditions. I thought she was off her line well; she marshaled the box really well. I'm delighted for her because she cares about goalkeeping and she loves the sport."
Holmes and senior
Karissa Fenwick both finished with a team-high three shots apiece.
UAPBÂ (2-5-2, 2-2-2 SWAC) returns to action on Sunday, October 14 as it hosts Prairie View A&M in SWAC competition. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Pumphrey Stadium.
