GRAMBLING, La. - Big games by the Arkansas-Pine Bluff quartet of
Kendalle Howard, Charis Adefolarim,
Britney Sahlmann and
Haley Gomez led the Lady Lions (5-15, 3-6) to a four-set – 25-15, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18 – win over Grambling State (5-18, 3-6) Thursday evening during Southwestern Athletic Conference action at Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Adefolarim led UAPB with 15 kills. Howard and Gomez put up double-doubles, as Howard made 12 kills and 12 digs, and Gomez added 12 kills and 15 digs. Sahlmann dished out 43 assists, adding seven kills, five digs and two blocks.
UAPB had little trouble with matters in the first two sets, winning by double-digits to earn a 2-0 lead. The third frame featured a nip-and-tuck battle as neither side led by more than two in the set. A Howard kill put the Lady Lions in position for set point, but Grambling's Kevreion Ward smashed one home to tie it at 24, and consecutive miscues by UAPB handed the set to Grambling.
UAPB regrouped to begin the fourth set on a 19-9 run, ultimately sealing the match from that point.
Ward led Grambling with 15 kills, and Talicia Lang added nine to go with 11 digs. L'Murriel Thrower posted 19 assists, and Sheila Borders added 18. Erineka Mollere posted 27 digs.
UAPB (5-15, 3-6 SWAC) returns to action on Friday, October 19 as it faces Mississippi Valley State University in the second phase of the SWACÂ Round Up. First serve is set for 10 a.m. in Huntsville, Alabama.
