Lady Tigers edge out Lady Lions 66-57 in Arkansas

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions led by three points at the break but could not hold on as Grambling State survived with a 66-57 victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference play at H.O. Clemmons Arena. UAPB was led by Aiya El-Hassan as she finished with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line. She also grabbed four boards but had four turnovers while fellow Lady Lion Shawntayla Harris produced the games only double double by scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She also had four blocks on the night.

Turnovers got the best of the Lady Lions (3-15, 1-7 SWAC) on a night where it started off on the right track; a total of 33 were committed by UAPB to only 11 by Grambling. However, the Lady Lions dished out 17 total assists to only 10 for the Lady Tigers.

As a team UAPB shot 48 percent (24-of-50) while holding Grambling to just 29 percent (20-of-68) in the game. The Lady Lions dominated the glass, outrebounding Grambling 50-30. However, UAPB shot just 11 free throws all night while the Lady Lions shot 28 from the charity stripe.

Shakyla Hill tied a team-high with 11 points, nine rebounds, eight steals, six assists and four turnovers for the Lady Tigers who improve to 5-3 in conference play.

Grambling (8-11, 5-3 SWAC) outscored UAPB 13-8 in the final quarter.

UAPB returns to action on Monday, January 29 as it hosts Jackson State in SWAC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
