Box Score HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions have been on a slump as of late as the team lost its sixth consecutive game, this time against Texas Southern University by the score of 58-51 at H&PE Arena. The Lady Lions were led by point guard
Destiny Brewton who tied a team-high 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and hit 5-of-9 from the free throw line while teammate
Shawntayla Harris finished with 10 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with nine boards and three blocks. The Lady Lions had a total of three scorers in double figures.
"We have got to do better with our free throws," said head coach
Nate Kilbert. As a team the Lady Lions shot made 13-of-22 (59 percent) from the foul line while its opponent hit 22-of-35 (63 percent) free throws.
Despite scoring only three baskets in the opening quarter, UAPB (3-14, 1-6 SWAC) trailed 27-19 at the break thanks to solid defense as it allowed TSU to score just two baskets in the second quarter. Senior Faiith Ohanta finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal in 32 minutes.
The nation's leading scorer, Joyce Kennerson, shot a dismal 3-of-19 from the field but nailed 10-of-18 from the foul line to tie a game-high 18 points for Texas Southern (10-8, 5-2 SWAC) while fellow Lady Tiger Kaitlyn Palmer also tied a game-high with 18 points.
As a team the Lady Lions lost the rebound battle 43-37 as both teams produced a total of 19 turnovers apiece. UAPB had only six assists in the game while Texas Southern only had nine.
UAPB returns to action on Saturday, January 27 as it hosts Grambling State University in Pine Bluff. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at H.O. Clemmons Arena. The theme is "Pack the House" as fans, students and alumni are encouraged to wear black.
