UAPB Takes Down Little Rock Trojans, 2-1

Little Rock, AR.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff junior pitcher Chris Phelps turned in his best outing of the 2017 season Tuesday night as the Golden Lions' left-handed starter hurled 4.1 innings of three-hits baseball en route to a 2-1 road victory against the Little Rock Trojans in a non conference in state rival play held at Gary Hogan Stadium.

Matt Shindlebower (1-0) enter the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to pick up the win for UAPB and only allowed one hit and no baserunners. He retired four of the five batters that he faced.

With the win, UAPB moved to (8-19, 6-6 SWAC) and Little Rock (10-19, 3-6 Sunbelt).

The Golden Lions' Thomas Sanchez, Tyrus Lopez and Jacob Waters pitched the final three innings of the contest. Waters picked up his first save of the season after forcing Cameron Knight to ground out to second with one runner on to seal the victory.

UAPB jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Sergio Esparza single to center field scoring Kacy Higgins, who reached base on a double to left field. The Trojans bounced back with a run in bottom of the third when Zach Baker single to shortstop and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to left field by Nik Gifford.

UAPB would roar back to score its game winning run in the top of the fourth inning. Dontrell Brown led off the rally on a fielder choice with one out. He then advanced to second base on a wild pitch and later scored when Corey Henderson, smoked a double through the right side of left field.

Corey Henderson finished the contest 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, while Jaquese Moore notched a 2-for-4 performance, Jerimiah Figueroa going 2-of-3 from the plate, Sergio Esparza 1-of-4 with an RBI and true freshman Kacy Higgins finished 1-of-2 with a run scored.

Little Rock Zach Ours was issued the loss for the Trojans. He allowed two hits in the contest, but both earned runs occurred during his time on the mound.

UAPB will jump back into conference play against Grambling St. for a weekend's series starting Friday April 7 at 6 p.m. (CT) and will be held at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
