Box Score WACO, Texas (Feb. 28) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team dropped a 17-3 decision to Baylor University here Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
UAPB finished the contest with 11 hits, whereas BU finished with 20.
The Golden Lions was led by both
Sergio Esparza and
Corey Henderson with Henderson finishing with a team high three hits and Esparza with two.
BU had two players to finish with three hits each in Andy Thomas and Richard Cunningham.
BU used five pitchers in the contest with Alex Phillips receiving the win for the Bears. He pitched three innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out two in this 13 innings on the mound. In relief Hayden Kettler toed the rubber for three innings, allowing four hits, one earned runs and striking out three in the 14 batters he faced. BU three more pitchers to record one inning of relief in Hunter Seay, Kyle Ott and Daniel Caruso. Hunter pitched one inning, allowing three hits and striking out two in the six batters he faced. Both Ott and Caruso pitched a scoreless inning in their time of the mound.
UAPB also five pitchers in the contest with
Thomas Sanchez receiving the loss for the Golden Lions. He pitched two and two-thirds innings, along six hits, four earned runs and striking out one in the 15 batters he faced.
Kenny Hinton in relief, gave up seven hits, seven earned runs and striking out one in the two and two-third innings on the mound.
Nicholas Watson toed the rubber for a two-third inning, allowing four hits, and four earned runs. Both
Chris Phelps and
Matt Shindlebower pitched one inning each in their outing on the mound. Phelps gave up three hits, and two earned runs in the six batters he faced, while Shindlebower pitched a scoreless innings in the four batter he faced.
The Golden Lions scored the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead on a Henderson single to the left side scoring
Julian Jones in their half of the second inning.
BU reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second inning with Kameron Esthay scoring an Andy Thomas double to left center. Then Thomas would scoring on a Richard Cunningham, sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead.
The Bears increased their lead 9-1 with BU plated two runs in their half of the third inning and five runs in their half of the fourth inning.
UAPB pushed across two more runs in the top of the fifth inning with both
Jaquese Moore and
Dontrell Brown scoring on an Esparza single, cutting BU's lead to 9-3.
BU would then plate six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and two in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 17-3 finale.
