Box Score Pine Bluff, Ark - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions earned its second Southwestern Athletic Conference victory in back-to-back nights, this time against Prairie View A&M in four sets (17-25, 25-14, 28-26,25-23) at H.O. Clemmons Arena on Senior Night. Outside hitter
Lisa Casimie led all players with 21 kills on the night while setter
Britney Sahlmann finished with a game-high 53 assists in the victory (a 2017 SWAC record).
"It was very exciting, but those last two sets were a little too close for comfort," said head coach
Dustin Sahlmann. "They (PV) came out and put a lot of pressure on us. In set one they got a pretty convincing win 25-17. During the break we talked about refocusing and coming out with a little more energy and fire. The ladies responded and came out way more focused with a 25-14 victory. The third set was back and forth the whole time until towards the end when they took a five-point lead, so I took my last timeout and told my team that we have been in this situation before and we know how to come back, and sure enough we came back and tied it at 24 then ended up closing out 28 to 26. In the fourth set, we found ourselves down late but I told the team that once again we've been in this situation before (up two sets to one) but haven't closed it out, so this is up to you guys to change the course of the way that we finish out these close four sets, and they came through."
UAPB's (11-19, 10-7 SWAC)
Kendalle Howard had a solid game with 19 kills while teammate
Taylor Sheppy chipped in with 10 kills on the night. Senior
Jade Sanlin finished with a game-high 25 digs in the win. Prairie View's (7-17, 7-10 SWAC) Larissa Martinez finished with a game-high 19 kills.
Subsequently, UAPB swept the final weekly players honors of the 2017 SWAC volleyball season as Casimie, Sanlin and Sahlmann were honored by the league for their outstanding performances in competition from October 31-November 6.
