UAPB volleyball picks up back-to-back SWAC victories

10/21/2017 9:25:00 AM

Box Score (Montgomery, Ala.) The Lady Lions racked up two more victories in one day, defeating both Mississippi Valley State University (25-19, 26-24, 25-13) and Jackson State University (25-23, 25-14, 25-16) in straight sets in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions have now won three straight conferences games dating back to its Oct. 9 victory against Prairie View A&M.

"I thought we did a great job of coming out focused after being off for two weeks," said head coach Dustin Sahlmann. "We were glad to be back competing after homecoming festivities. We had a little bit of a mental lapse in the second set but we regrouped and ended the match with a strong third set."

In the first match, UAPB (7-16, 6-4 SWAC) was led by Taylor Sheppy  who finished with a game-high 14 kills and also picked up 10 digs while teammate Britney Sahlmann produced a game-high 40 assists, added four kills, nine digs and one service ace in the victory. Kendalle Howard had a solid game with 10 kills, two service aces, 15 digs and two block assists. Despite the dominant performance, Sahlmann is still not content.

"There are still some things that we need to correct if we are going to win matches that are hard fought throughout," said Sahlmann.

In the second match, the onslaught continued as both Lisa Casimie and Howard produced 11 kills apiece while Taylor Burrall chipped in with nine kills for the Lady Lions who picked up a rare victory against Jackson State. Sahlmann racked up another 31 assists in the victory.

"This was a big win for our program," said Sahlmann. "It was only the second time in program history that we beat Jackson State, and to sweep them says a lot about where this team is. We just made some defensive adjustments and it allowed us to create some extra blocking as well as offensive chances for us. All phases of our game were working well. It was a total team win."

The Lady Lions volleyball team returns to action in day two of SWAC pool play (2nd. Round) on Saturday, October 21 as they face Alcorn State University. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. in Montgomery.
