Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Jan. 21) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball team got back into the win column with a 49-45 win over league leading Texas Southern University, here Saturday afternoon at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
This is the first win for the Lady Lions over the Lady Tigers in four seasons, snapping TSU's nine-game win streak over UAPB. The last time UAPB defeated TSU was in the first meeting of the 2011-12 season with Lady Lions defeating the Lady Tigers, 69-52.
In the first stanza of play, UAPB jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 8:50 remaining on a pair of baskets by
Erin Boothe and one by
Ajia Richardson.
TSU countered with an 11-2 run to take an 11-8 lead on pair of Joyce Kennerson free throws with 4:28 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 19-12 with an 8-4 run to end the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers pushed their lead to 12 points as the Lady Lions trailed 28-16 with 6:12 remaining before the half.
UAPB uses a 9-4 run to cut TSU's lead to 29-25 on a
Shawntayla Harris put back with 2:12 left to go in the half.
The Lady Lions went into the break trailing the Lady Tigers, 32-25.
In the third quarter, UAPB erased a TSU 11-point lead to take a 38-36 lead on Richardson layup with 4:18 to go.
TSU would head into the fourth quarter of player with a 42-40 lead over the UAPB.
In a tip and tuck fourth quarter, a Harris free throw with 1:37 left in the quarter would give the Lady Lions a 46-45 lead over the Lady Tigers.
The UAPB defense would not let TSU score in the final 1:30 left in the contest as the Lady Lions held on for the 49-45 win.
TSU (11-6, 5-1 SWAC) was led by Artavia Ford with a team high 16 points and seven rebounds, followed by Kaithlyn Palmer with nine and Chynna Ewing with six. Breasia McElrath led the Tigers on the boards with nine.
UAPB (5-12, 2-4 SWAC) was led by
Niya Head with 11 points and 11 rebounds, followed by
Shawntayla Harris with nine points and 10 rebounds and
Destiny Brewton with eight.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Monday, January 23 against Prairie View A&M in a 5:30 p.m. start at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
