Golden Lions Take Rubber Match from Southern University, 7-2

Baton Rouge, LA. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff registered their third stellar performance on the mound for the weekend to take the series from Jaguars with a 7-2 win Saturday afternoon at Lee-Hines Field.

After a dramatic finish Friday night in game one and being down the majority of the game, before Julian Jones hit a monster two run homer over the right center wall in the top of the ninth to give UAPB (6-16, 6-3 SWAC) a 10-9 win over the Jaguars.

In game two Saturday, the Jaguars jumped on the board first in bottom of the third with a double by Ashanti Wheatley, would then advance to third on a ground out by Phillip Williams and a flied out RBI by Javeayan Williams. Southern would tack on four more runs, putting the game out of reach 5-1, before UAPB wouldnt back down without a fight.

Jaqueese Moore would start the rally on a walk, followed by Jacob Columbo double off the right field wall and scoring Moore. Columbo would advanced to third off a wild pitch and would then cross home plate off a hard hit to short stop from Jordan Knox and forcing an error, which would eventually score Columbo to cut the lead to two.

Southern would take game two forcing the rubber match in the conference series.

In the rubber match in game three Humberto Medina (2-3) pitched an outstanding game going 7.2 innings, scattering seven hits while striking out 12, as he yielded two runs on the afternoon, before handing the ball off to Ciji Ramos who worked 1.1 blank frames allowing no hits and close the game with two strike outs.

UAPB pitchers held Southern (8-13, 3-6 SWAC) to 7-of-29 hitting with runners on base, including 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Bryan Melendez (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Jaguars. He allowed five runs on four hits, while hile striking out two in 2.0 innings.
The Jaguars drew first blood scoring two runs in the first three innings. The Golden Lions would answer back immediately in the top of the fourth when Michael Bradley double to right field and would then score off a single up the middle.

Bradley tied the game (2-2) in the top of the sixth when he single to left scoring Dontrell Brown who triple down left field line earlier at bat.
The Golden Lions tacked on an insurance runs, scoring three runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eight.

Michael Bradley led the way with a game high for UAPB going 3-for-4 with two RBI's, followed by Dontrell Brown going 2-for-5 with one RBI and scoring two runs. Jerimiah Figueroa contributed two hits with one RBI and Jaqueese Moore and Roberto Colon each had two hits for the Golden Lions. Julian Jones, Joshua Williams and Pine Bluff native Adam Graham had one hit apiece.

UAPB returns to action Tuesday as they travel for a 6:00 pm game against the Conway Bears.
