Golden Lions Nearly Pull Off Upset Over the University of Memphis

Box Score Memphis, Tenn. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff went toe-to-toe with the University of Memphis Tuesday afternoon, but it was the Tigers who escaped FedEx Park with a 6-5 victory in the first midweek game.

The Golden Lions got on the board in the first inning with a single by Jordan Knox with two outs before UAPB went on a rally having back-to-back-to-back singles from Joshua Williams, Aderly Perez and Juilian Jones to put the score at 2-0.

Jaqueese Moore reached on an error by the shortstop, which scored Perez who scored from third to increase the lead to 3-0.  Memphis would make a pitching change before the rally continue with Jacob Columbo single through the ride side scoring Jones to push the lead to 4-0.

Aderly Perez would pick up where he left off, by hitting a double off the center field wall, but would eventually score off a wild pitch from third to give UAPB a 5-0 lead in the top of the third.

Memphis got on the board in the fourth after having bases loaded and a walk by Ciji Ramos to score the first run in the game for the Tigers.  With several questionable strike zone calls to end the inning and bases loaded Zach Schritenthal ripped a two-out double on a 2-2 pitch into the corner in right field to cut UAPB lead to one (5-4).

Memphis tied the game in the fifth inning after Chris Carrier doubled down the lf line, then Brandon Grudzielanek single up the middle moving Carrier to second, Carrier would steal third on a wild pitch, moving Grudzielanek to second.  Jacob Elliott would single to second base scoring Carrier for the game tying at (5-5).

The Tigers would rally in the bottom of the 6th off a leadoff single from Elliott, in which Carrier would come up big with a double scoring Elliott for a 6-5 lead.

The Golden Lions did not go quietly in the seventh inning as Roberto Colon sparked a rally with a double to left field wall, but UAPB would not be able to tie the game as a groundout ended the inning and the threat.

Six Golden Lions pitchers combined to allow just six runs.  Ciji Ramos surrendered five runs over 4.2 innings, while Harry ESTEP (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one run on two hits over 1 inning.

Hunter Smith (1-0) picked up the victory by allowing no runs over 3 innings, but giving up two hits.  Starting pitcher allowed four runs over five hits in 0.2 innings for the Tigers before being knocked off the mound.

Julian Jones and Aderly Perez led UAPB going 2-for-4 from the plate with Jones contributed two RBIs, with Jordan Knox, Roberto Colon and Joshua Williams finished with one hit apiece.

UAPB will be back in conference play when they will host Prairie View in a three-game series this weekend March 18-20 at the Torii Hunter Baseball/Softball Complex. With the first pitch is schedule for 3:00pm Friday.
