UAPB Baseball Picked Second In Preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference Polls
Birmingham, Alabama — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was picked to finished second in the 2016 SWAC Conference standings in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches; it was announced Monday by the conference office.

This year's poll marked the closest voting margin between three teams in the conference once again, with Texas Southern topping the poll followed by the Golden Lions and Southern University.  All three of those teams earned three four-first place votes or more, marking the first time in conference preseason poll history that three or more teams received multiple first-place votes.

Furthermore, the three point separation between Texas Southern and UAPB along with Southern in third with 43 points.

The last time the Golden Lions were picked to finish second in the preseason poll came in 2014 and 2015 and UAPB went on to claim the Western Division SWAC championship both years.

The 2016 season marks UAPB's sixth under head coach Carlos James, who has guided the Golden Lions to a first-place finish in the conference in each of the past two seasons at the helm.

UAPB is coming off a 2015 season in which it finished 26-15 and while defeating Power 5 conference schools Mississippi State (SEC), Missouri (SEC), and Kansas (BIG 12).  The Golden Lions were 14-6 in SWAC play a year ago and return 14 lettermen and five starters from that club, including All-SWAC 1st team pitcher Blake ESTEP, shortstop Roberto Colon, 2nd team OF Jerimiah Figueroa and DH Chris Burns.
