(Nov. 18) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Volleyball team season ended on a sour note in a 3-1 loss to Southern University in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, here Friday afternoon at the TB Ellis Gymnasium.
UAPB (9-16) was led by
Kendalle Howard with a career high 17 kills, followed by
Lauren Corby with eight and
Taylor Burrall with six.
Britney Sahlmann led the team in assists with 29, while Corby led the team in digs with 16.
SU (13-13) has three Jaguars to finish in double-digit kills with Arabella Hall finishing with 14, Shelby Jolly with 13 and Paige Hall with 11. Calais led the team in assists with 25, while Diamond Williams led the team in digs with 20.
In the first set, it was battle down to the wire with the biggest lead being held by either team being five points with SU taking an 11-8 lead on an UAPB error.
UAPB tied the set at 13-13 on a double block by
Natalie Gibbs and Burrall.
The Jaguars then used a 5-1 run to take a 19-14 lead, capped off by a kill by Hall.
UAPB closed the gap as they pulled within two points with a 7-4 run, cutting SU's lead to 23-21.
The Jaguars then recorded back-to-back kills and a service ace to win the set 25-22 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
SU grabbed an early 10-4 lead in the second set, capped off by an UAPB attack error.
UAPB pulled with on three with a 14-11 run to cut SU's lead to 21-18.
The Jaguars went on to win the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match as they outscored the Lady Lions 4-2 for the 25-20 win.
UAPB jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the third set on a SU attack error.
The Jaguars tied the set at 16-16 on a Jolly kill, capping a 9-5 run by the Jaguars. SU then extended their lead to 20-16 with a 4-0 run on another kill by Jolly.
UAPB closed out the set with a 9-3 run to win the third set 25-23 to cut SU's lead to 2-1.
In the fourth set, SU jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a Brianna Hawkins kill.
UAPB then used 16-8 run to take a 19-18 lead on Howard kill.
SU then tied the set at 21-21 on a Malone Melodie kill. The Jaguars then tied the set at 23-23 on a UAPB attack error.
SU scored their final two points of the set on a service ace and an UAPB attack error for the 25-23 win to win the match 3-1.
