UAPB SWEEPS MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ON SENIOR NIGHT

UAPB Sweeps Mississippi Valley St. on Senior Night 3-0
Box Score Pine Bluff, AR.- It took the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball all of 70 minutes to earned its second sweep of the season Friday night blanking Mississippi Valley St., 3-0 (25-11,25-16,25-10), on senior night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The Lady Lions improved to 7-15, overall and 7-8 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Devilettes dropped to 3-24 overall and 1-15 in the conference with the loss.

Sophomore Natalie Gibbs led the Lady Lions with seven kills.  Sophomore Taylor Burrall, freshman Britney Sahlmann and junior Lauren Corby tallied with six kills apiece.  Freshman Kendalle Howard added five kills.  UAPB had a .426 hitting percentage versus Mississippi Valley St. -.013 hitting percentage.  Reigning SWAC Conference Freshman and Setter of the Week Britney Sahlmann added 21 assists and six digs.  Senior Courtney Brand and Howard had three aces to add to the stats along with Burrall with four blocks and three solo blocks.

UAPB took the first two points of the opening set off a Kill and solo block by Taleah Ross and Taylor Burrall.  Mississippi Valley would bounce back to eventually tie the game at 5-5.  The Lady Lions and Deveilettes exchanged points until a kill by Sahlmann and a couple of aces from Brand gave UAPB a 10-5 lead.  Devilettes remained within a couple of points of the Lady Lions until UAPB would go on a 15-4 run to take the first set 25-11.
 
The Lady Lions jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the second set.  Valley took two of the next four points to cut UAPB lead to 10-4 but a pair of kills by Burrall, Howard, Sahlmann and a pair of Devilettes' attacking errors pushed the Lady Lions lead to 16-7, forcing Valley to make some quick changes.  The Devilettes came within seven points of UAPB multiple times in the set, but UAPB closed the set by taking the final four points, winning the second set 25-16 and taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
 
UAPB started the third set by taking 10 of the first 12 points, including six consecutive points. Howard had two aces during the six-point run.  Several team errors by Valley pushed UAPB's lead to 13-2, forcing Valley to call a timeout.  Valley cut UAPB lead to 20-10, but the Lady Lions would go on a 5-0 run to take the final set 25-10 and win the match 3 sets to 0, clinching the second sweep of the season.

The Lady Lions will play their final home game of the season Saturday night Nov. 12, 2016 versus Jackson St. in the H.O. Clemmons Arena at 6:30 p.m., before wrapping up the season next week on the road against Texas Southern and Prairie View.
