Lady Lions Racks Up Second-Straight SWAC Conference Victory

Box Score Pine Bluff, AR.- Returning to H.O. Clemmons Arena for the second consecutive day, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team defeated Alcorn St., 3-1 (25-10, 25-18, 26-24, 25-17). The Lady Lions move to 2-4 in SWAC play and 2-11 overall, while the Lady Braves drop to 0-3 in conference play and 1-11 overall.

Lauren Corby showed up big for UAPB on both sides of play.  The junior finished with a match-high 12 kills, 12 digs.

Natalie Gibbs and Kendalle Howard closed the night both with nine kills, while Courtney Brand recorded 12 digs.

For the second match in a row, Britney Sahlmann registered a double-double at 29 assists and 10 digs.

UAPB secured the first five points before the two sides went back and forth on the scoreboard.  Kendalle Howard put the Lady Lions up by seven at 14-7 when she secured a kill, set up by Sahlmann. The Lady Braves claimed fought back, but the Lady Lions kept the pressure on. With the score set at 24-10, Natalie Gibbs was able to find enough space for a kill and give UAPB the first set.

The second set saw both sides reach a 1-1 tie at the start. With Howard serving, UAPB won three straight points.  Alcorn St. slowly made its way back into the set later in the game and cut the deficit 17-12.  UAPB would outscore the Lady Braves 8-5 rally to clinched the set on a kill to give UAPB the 2-0 lead.

After the Lady Lions jumped to an early lead, Alcorn St. begin the third set with momentum, but UAPB overcame the four-point deficit to tie the frame at 17-all.  The set saw two more ties with the latest at 24-24 after an ace by Alcorn St. Carol Kiam-Assato to secure the set.   

In the fourth set, after being tied at 15-all, UAPB grabbed a late lead and never gave it up.  A total of seven ties made for the closest set of the evening. The
Lady Lions closed the evening on a service ace by Jenna Wuzinski, giving UAPB the win.

UAPB is back in action on Saturday Oct. 8, when it takes on Grambling. The match between the Lady Lions and Lady Tigers is set to start at 3 p.m. CST.
