Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Oct. 1) - Alabama State hands the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football team their second conference loss of the season with a 41-21 win over the Golden Lions, here Saturday afternoon at ASU Stadium.
ASU scored on their first series of the game on a Quinterris Toppings three-yard TD run with 12:26 left in the first quarter, giving them a 7-0 lead over UAPB, capping a seven-play, 57-yard drive by the Hornets.
UAPB tied the contest at 7-7 on a three-yard TD pass by
Brandon Duncan to
Willie Young with 1:32 left in the quarter, capping a nine-play, 72-yard drive by the Golden Lions.
Toppings scored his second TD of the contest for the Hornets on a six-yard run with 5:43 left in the second quarter, giving ASU a 14-7 lead, capping a 10-play, 69-yard drive by the Hornets.
ASU closed out the first half with a 26-yard TD pass to Nygel Lee from Toppings as time expired, to give the Hornets a 21-7 lead going into the break.
UAPB received the ball to begin the third quarter as they went 59 yards on nine plays in 4:16 to cut ASU's lead to 21-14 on a John Hawkins, two-yard TD pass from
Brandon Duncan with 10:59 remaining in the third quarter.
Khalid Thomas would score the Hornets' next two TDs as he scored from two-yards out with 6:59 remaining in the third quarter and from six-yards out with 5:51 left in the fourth, giving ASU a 34-14 lead over UAPB.
Terry Montgomery scored UAPB's final TD of the game on a three-yard run with 3:05 left in the game, cutting ASU's lead to 34-21.
Kenneth Thomas scored the final TD of the contest for ASU on a two-yard run with 1:24 remaining in the contest, for the 41-21 finale.
Montgomery led the UAPB rushers with 38 yards on 12 carries with one TD on the day.
Duncan finished the contest with 380 yards passing by completing 29 passes in 38 attempts with two TDS with his longest completion being for 55 yards.
Both
Willie Young and
Cody Swain led the Golden Lions receivers with Young finishing with 117 yards on eight receptions and Swain finishing with 142 yards on seven receptions.
UAPB had three players to finish with eight tackles a piece to leads the Golden Lion defense in
Braxton Hoof,
Tashad Charity and Willie Duncan.
Thomas finished the contest with game high 143 yards on 22 carries and scoring two TDs to lead the ASU rushers.
Toppings finished the contest with 144 yards pass by completing 15 passes in 25 attempts and one passing TD and one interception.
Lee led the ASU receivers with 31 yards on two receptions and scoring one TD.
Darron Johnson led the ASU defense with eight, whereas Andre Wilson finished with seven.
UAPB will have next Saturday off and will return to action on Saturday, October 15 as the Golden Lions will welcome Alabama A&M to Golden Lion Stadium in their annual homecoming game in a 2:30 p.m. start.
