Box Score Baton Rouge, La. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team swept Southern University (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) Monday night in F.G. Clark Arena, improving to 3-15 overall and 1-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Lauren Corby led the Lady Lions with nine kills and three blocks and
Ayanna Parker added six kills, three aces and three blocks, with a match-high .375attack percentage.
UAPB completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third. The Lady Lions took a 4-1 lead to start the set. Southern (1-13, 1-1 SWAC) cut the lead to one with the score, UAPB 16 Southern 15, and while the game was close throughout the set, the Lady Lions never trailed. UAPB led by as many as four in the final set, hitting .189 with 10 kills.
Katy Hufnagel tallied 23 assists with five digs, and
Jade Sanlin a match-high 12 digs.
Whitney Harris scored four kills, and all nine UAPB players played a major role in the sweep.
After the score being tied at 20-20, the Lady Lions went on a 5-3 run at the end of the first set to win 25-23. UAPB took a 5-0 lead to start the set, but the Lady Jaguars rallied back, taking its first lead at 19-18. The Lady Lions answered with three straight to retake the lead for good.
UAPB cruised to a 25-20 win in the second set after scoring the final three points of the game. The Lady Lions never trailed Southern, gradually stretching the lead over the course of the set to claim the sweep on the road. UAPB defense was even more effective, holding the Lady Jaguars to a .070 attack percentage.
The Lady Lions will travel to Monticello, Arkansas for a non conference game to face the University of Arkansas Monticello, Tuesday at 6 p.m.
