SOUTHERN TAKES TWO FROM UAPB

Joshua Cassidy makes the play at third base to end the 1st inning for the Golden Lions
BATON ROUGE, (April 18) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Southern University with the Jaguars pulling out a 4-3 win in game one and winning the second game 14-9.
 
In game one, UAPB tallied four hits, while SU finished with four.
 
 UAPB had four player to finish with one hit each for the Golden Lions.
 
SU was led by both D.J. Wallace and Jose De La Torre with two hits each to lead the Jaguars.
 
Santos Saldivar (3-5) picked up the win for the Jaguars, allowing four hits, two earned runs and tallying 16 punch outs in nine innings of work.
 
Andre Davis (2-2) received the loss for the Golden Lions, allowing one hit in two-third of an inning on the mound.  Billy Olson made the start for UAPB, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out six in five inning of work.  Kevin Walsh pitched two innings of relief, one earned run and striking out five in the eight batters he faced.  Also making an appearance on the mound was Humberto Medina, allowing one hit and striking out three in one inning of work.
 
UAPB was first to light up the scoreboard with a Chris Burns triple scoring both Rashawn Tillman and Vladimir Gomez, giving the Golden Lions a 2-0 in their half of the first inning.
 
SU tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the first with a De La Torre double to left field scoring both Robinson Mateo and Marcus Tomlin.
 
UAPB reclaimed the lead in the top of the second with a Tommy Haas sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Josh Cassidy, giving the Golden Lions a 3-2 lead.
 
The Jaguars tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning with Lance Jones scoring on a Tyler Kirksey fielder's choice.
 
SU picked up the victory in the bottom of the ninth inning with a Tomlin single scoring Kirksey for the 4-3 win.
 
 
In game two, UAPB finished with nine hits, while SU tallied 19.
 
Cassidy led the Golden Lions from the plate with three hits, followed by Andre Davis with two.
 
SU was led by Jones with four hits, followed by Kirksey, DeLa Torre and Marcus Hodge, who finished with three hits each for the Jaguars.
 
Tyler Robinson (4-1) picked the win for the Jaguars, allowing four hits in his five innings of relief.  James Fontenot made the start for the Jaguars, allowing four hits, three earned runs and striking out two in three innings of relief.
 
UAPB grabbed the early 1-0 lead with Jeremiah Figueroa scoring on a Davis sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the third inning.
 
SU tied the contest at 1-1 with Kirksey scoring on a Mateo sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the third inning.
 
The Golden Lions broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning with Burns scoring on a Jeremiah Figueroa double to left field. Then Figueroa would score on a Gomez double to left field, giving the Golden Lions a 3-1 lead.
 
SU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Jaguars scored three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
 
The Jaguars added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as SU plated five runs to take a 9-3 lead.
 
Gomez cut the Jaguars lead to 9-4 as he scored on a Figueroa double to left field in the top of the sixth inning.
 
 UAPB would plate two more runs in the top of the seventh inning and three in the top of the ninth, while the Jaguars plated one run in the bottom of the sixth inning and four runs in the bottom of the eighth, for the 14-9 finale.
