Box Score Grambling, La. - University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team swept a doubleheader against Grambling St. Tigers on Friday at Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones Park stadium. The Golden Lions won game one 7-3 and took game two 9-7 to improve to (9-9 overall and 6-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference).
With the wins, the Golden Lions jumped into a game out of first place in the (SWAC) Western Division conference standings.
Game One – UAPB 7, Grambling 3The Golden Lions fell behind 2-0 through two innings, but rallied for four in the top of the third and three more in the sixth to seal the victory.
In the second inning the Tigers (4-16, 2-5 SWAC) connected on two straight singles to put runners on the corners, before Roger Diaz grounded to
Andre Davis scoring Yariel Medina. Tra Bell would single to right scoring Dee Brown to make the score 2-0.
UAPB bats would come to life in the top of the third with Tommy Hass leading off with a single, UAPB would load the bases with
Rashawn Tillman, Haas, and
Westi Hinkel, before
Andre Davis blast a curve ball in the left field gap to score Haas and Tillman and moving Hinkel to third. Hinkel would score off a sacrifice fly by
Vladimir Gomez to give UAPB lead 3-2.
The Golden Lions would not stop there, in the sixth inning Haas, Tillman, Hinkel and Gomez would continue the rally leading off with another single, scoring three runs to take game 1.
Westin Hinkel led the way for UAPB going 2-for-3 with one RBI and scoring two runs. Haas, Tillman, Gomez, each had two hits apiece.
Billy Olson (3-2) would take the win for the Golden Lions going 8.1 innings giving up three runs striking out 10.
Game two – UAPB 9, Grambling 7 The Golden Lions jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first, sending seven batters to plate on four hits to open the game with a 4-0 lead.
Grambling would answer back with a single up the middle by Robert Lopez in the bottom of the second, followed by a single by Edwin Drexler to moved Lopez to second. The Tigers would take the lead 5-4 off a two-run home run by second baseman Larry Barraza.
UAPB wouldn't back down;
Westi Hinkel reached after being hit by a pitch & stole second. Chris Burns chopped an infield single, driving in Hinkel to the tie the game at 5-5. All-SWAC third baseman Josh Cassidy homered a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Golden Lions a 7-5 lead.
UAPB would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI single to right field scoring
Jose Hernandez and
Jason Ibrahim to secure a 9-7 victory.
Right-hander
Jerimiah Figueroa (1-0) would enter the game in the bottom of the second to pick up his first win of the season for UAPB. Figueroa would scattered three hits and three strikes in an impressive effort by the Golden Lions bullpen. UAPB relievers
Andre Davis and Humberto Medina would close the game, giving up no runs and striking out three in the last three innings, with Medina picking up his second save of the season. Ike O'bear was tagged with the loss for Grambling.
Josh Cassidy led the Golden Lions at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI's, and a two-run homerun.
Rashawn Tillman,
Andre Davis and Chris Burn each turned in two-hit performances.
The Golden Lions will be back in action Sunday, March 22, when they look to wrap up their series with Grambling St. first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
